Halloween Costume Round-Up

Here’s a quick look at the boys’ costumes over the years.  I miss the days of the cute plush costumes!  I bought a super adorable plush spider suit for Beckett, but he will have nothing to do with it.  Both boys are all about the thin-weird-fabric big boy costumes.  Sigh.

Heartsies

My littlest helper started pre-school this fall, and all of a sudden he is interested in all of these ‘academic’ pursuits that he really had no time for before… like writing, drawing, cutting…
The best part?  The first word he learned to write… ‘MOMMY’!  (He can’t write his own name yet, but I’m pretty thrilled to see ‘MOMMY’ on all of his work!)

ps… It’s snowing here!

Halloween Tricks & Treats With Style At Home

Is it universal that all kids love Halloween decor?  My kids are so excited to see the houses that have ‘spooky’ decorations outside.  I’m totally not into outdoor decorations1.
However… like I said, the kids love decorations.  So I decided I should pull together some non-tacky indoor Halloween decor.  Coincidentally, Elaine Song, Style At Home Web Editor, asked me to take part in a round up of bloggers’ Halloween ‘tricks and treats’ so I got out my glue gun and got busy…
I was inspired by these cute framed pieces, which I found on Pinterest (of course), but were from the pages of the fall issue of Sweet Paul.

I wasn’t up for doing the embroidery, but I loved the quirky sayings, so I used some gold sequins and simply hot-glued them to some black fabric.  I found the gold frames at Value Village for $2 each.  Score.  The mini-pumpkins that I bedazzled for Thanksgiving fit right into the vignette.  Here’s how it turned out:

Hop over to Style at Home to see the rest of the bloggers’ Tricks & Treats.  You will be impressed with how stylish Halloween decor can be!  Thanks again to Elaine for including me in this fun feature!
1 – Mainly because I get SUPER annoyed at the people who leave those tacky decorations outside until Christmas.  Plus, I really don’t like handing out candy to trick-or-treaters and I think the decorations just encourage more of them.  (I know, I know… I’m a bit of a Halloween scrooge.  My mom and sister are totally on the same page… anyone else?)

Exciting Developments & A House Tour

I’m officially going into business!  I just started working with my first ‘stranger’ clients.  (OK, they aren’t really strangers anymore.  I’ve met with them twice.)  I’m helping them select kitchen finishes, and I love the direction that they are going in!  But I haven’t actually asked them if I can blog about it, so that’s all I’ll say.
So now I really need to nail down some business details.  Like business cards. And a business name.  I always thought I’d go with ‘Carissa Erickson Interiors’, but my name is a bit tricky to spell, and it’s kind of long.  I’m wondering if that will be problematic???  Maybe?  Maybe Not?  Input please!!!
Anyways… I realized that I haven’t ever really posted any of the ‘work’ that I’ve done for family and friends.  So today is the day!
This is the first house that I ‘officially’ decorated.  Well, my sister and I decorated it together, actually (before she went back to work!)  It was my Uncle’s new home, and needed to be furnished and zhushed up with wallpaper, tile, accessories, etc.
The light in this house is amazing.  Here’s the view from the front door.  That huge window overlooks a big park.

One of my favourite pieces was this sunburst mirror.  It filled up the tv space perfectly!  (Don’t worry… we snuck a tv into a different location…)

Peeking through towards the dining nook:

Dining area:

Kitchen island… (Can you spot the tv???  It swings out to face the island.)

We loved this tile:

Master bedroom.  That headboard looked gigantic… until the mattress was delivered!  That bed is huge.

Orange room.  Isn’t that bedside table the cutest?

Blue room.  I love this wallpaper with the blue lampshades!

Green room.  Gotta love the super cool Mad Men-esque pictures.

You know what was fun about this project?  Starting with a completely blank canvas.  We didn’t have to ‘work with’ any existing stuff.  On the other hand… that’s a different kind of challenge… adding personality when you are purchasing all new pieces.  Anyways, we loved working on this house, and are super grateful to our uncle for trusting us with the job!

Things I Love About My New Living Room

First of all, thanks for all of the kind comments on my vlog post last week!  My friends and I have had a lot of laughs about how oddly deep my voice sounds on the video.  Oh well!  As promised, here are a few more photos.

The #1 improvement to the room is definitely the fireplace wall.

I wanted to keep the look classic and traditional.  But I also wanted some ‘wow’, that’s where the idea for the black fireplace surround came in.  I love it!  We needed to fix the draughty fireplace anyways, so we replaced it with a much nicer model that keeps our living room and kitchen warm and cozy through the cold winter months.

The photo above the fireplace is of my two boys and was taken by my friend Cynthia.

My favourite part of the living room has to be the new cabinets.  Look at all of the toy storage space we have now!!!

The fabulous painting above is by Samantha Sano… you can see more of her work at The Summer Project.

And I love that we can close the doors on the television.

I’m pretty proud of the fact that almost everything in this room was either built by my Dad, made (or made-over) by me, or thrifted.

I sewed the curtains, slipcovered the two sofas, sewed a new cover for the papasan chair, and painted the lamp shades:

I found both of the brass side tables on kijiji, the brass reading lamp used to be my Grandma’s, and the wooden piece above the sofa was from Pier 1 (about 5 years ago):

This room truly is a LIVING room.  Or we could call it a FAMILY room.  Because my family really does live in this room.  This is where we all hang out almost all of the time.  We finally have one room that is ‘decorated’ enough for me, yet comfortable and cozy enough for the whole family… success!!!

Monday…

Whew!!!  Kids are off to school… I’m sitting here in my work-out clothes trying to convince myself to hit the elliptical trainer in the basement.  Ugh.

But first I thought I’d share some photos from our Stella & Dot party last week… Cristin sent me these cool photos… I love hipstamatic!

That’s me and my sister.  (I bought that necklace!!!):

Vlog: The Living Room Reveal!

DSCN4114

Yippee!!!!  The living room is finally done!  (Well… the big projects are done… there will be more zhushing and accessorizing, you can be sure.  That job is never really done, is it?)

I thought it might be fun to do a little ‘vlog’ to show off the room.  Then I thought, “oh crap… I can’t stand the sound of my voice on video.  There’s no way I’m posting this”. Then I thought, “whatever, it can’t be any more embarrassing sharing the video than it was recording it”.  Plus, it’s proving to be more difficult to get decent photos than to just cruise around the room with the video on.  So here it is.  Enjoy!

Things I’m loving:

  • The room now feels very ‘grown up’, but is still kid friendly.
  • We have a TON of storage!
  • This room actually reflects my personal style now.  Lots of black & white, neutral accessories, touches of gold, a bit of chevron, and traditional style with some quirky eclectic details.

I’ve got a bunch of photos and more details to share tomorrow…

Stay tuned.

REALLY???

Jack & Beckett… I’m talking to you…
You are practically old enough to read this blog.
You are both DEFINITELY too old for this:

Yet another reminder is in order:
“We ONLY draw on PAPER!!!”
